Scope of BS7858
BS7858:2019 sets the standard for personnel screening in security-sensitive environments. It is not vetting to government SC/DV level but is the industry baseline.
The evidence you'll need
Passport / driving licence, proof of address, five-year employment and address history, two written references per employer or gap, DBS check, financial probity (declared or checked).
How gaps are handled
Every day in the last five years must be accounted for. Gaps are cleared with statutory declarations, character references or documentation of travel.
Duration and renewal
Screening is renewed at least every three years and re-checked on role change. Continuous employment shortens re-checks.
Common failure modes
Address history gaps, unverifiable references, undisclosed convictions and adverse financial data are the main failure modes.
